Ski touring from Hospental

Ski Freeride Ski touring Hiking

Put on your skins and set off right from the front door: Hospental is one of the classic ski-touring bases in the Ursern valley.

The Ursern is a high valley with three passes, countless flanks and reliably plentiful snow — tourers will find everything here from a relaxed half-day outing to a high-alpine three-thousander, usually without a long approach.

Straight from the village

The local tourers' mountain in Hospental is the Winterhorn (Pizzo d'Orsino, 2,661 m): the ascent starts right in the village, and the descent over the wide north-east slopes brings you straight back — one of the most popular ski tours in the valley.

Around the Gotthard and Oberalp

With the Gemsstock cable car as an approach lift, the Pizzo Centrale (2,999 m) becomes a rewarding day tour — the classic descent leads through the Guspis valley down towards the Gotthard road and ends in Hospental.

On the other side of the valley, the Rossbodenstock and the touring options around the Vermigel and Maighels huts at the Oberalp pass beckon — they can also be combined into a multi-day hut tour.

Safety & advice

Depending on snow conditions, the season lasts from roughly December to May. Please check the avalanche bulletin before every tour and carry full emergency equipment; for high-alpine objectives, a mountain guide is recommended. Our reception is happy to advise on current conditions and route suggestions.
